Is It Time For New Insulation or To Replace Your Air Conditioning Unit?

Upgrading an air conditioning system can be a challenging task for a couple of reasons. Firstly, these systems have a long lifespan, with a standard unit providing reliable service for up to 15 or 20 years. With proper pipe insulation and maintenance, they can even surpass this lifespan. Secondly, they are typically large and bulky, making it a considerable undertaking to upgrade them. Therefore, upgrading an aircon system requires careful consideration and planning. But a time will come when you’ll be forced to replace your old air conditioner with a newer and more efficient unit. Most of the time, you won’t decide when your air conditioner needs to be replaced. Instead, there are signs to watch for.

Signs Of An AC Needing Replacement: Your Energy Bills Are Unreasonably High

We usually know when energy costs increase because of inflation. The power company will always try to excuse the reason behind the hike. However, if your power bills are higher than your neighbour’s, it could be a good time to check your household appliances. When it comes to air conditioners, they may struggle to work efficiently and consume more energy as they age. This is because the fans and motor, which are critical parts of the system, must work harder to deliver fresh air. Over time, these components may fail to work effectively, resulting in increased energy bills. In some cases, the energy costs may even spike overnight. To avoid this, upgrading to a newer system can save you money.

Frequent Repairs

It is common practice to schedule a yearly check-up with a technician to evaluate the functionality of their air conditioning system, particularly before the summer. If the system needs frequent repairs within a year or requires replacement parts regularly, this is a sign the system has exceeded its peak performance years, and it would be wise to begin planning a replacement. It is better to avoid expending large amounts of money on multiple repair jobs every year and instead allocate the funds towards buying a new unit.

The Indoor Temperature Doesn’t Feel Right

If you are sure the thermostat is working well, but the temperature in your home isn’t adding up, something needs to be fixed. Such situations can occur when the system struggles to control the room temperature sufficiently. It could be a simple insulation problem, but repairing an air conditioner at this stage can be expensive. The best answer is to visit your local dealer and enquire about a new air conditioner.

The AC System Has Aged Beyond Repair

Sometimes, it may not require a technical glitch to know it’s time to replace your air conditioning unit. During a maintenance session, a technician may inform you that your system is still working, but it’s high time to upgrade. Most air conditioners made before the year 2008 are hardly functional these days. If your AC was made before that time, it’s advised that you start thinking about replacing it. Additionally, technology has come a long way since then, and newer, more energy-efficient units are available in the market that can save you money and hassle. Replacing your old air conditioner with a new, efficient unit can substantially reduce running costs.

Are You Still Unsure?

If you are still deciding whether to replace your AC system, hiring a professional for assistance may be helpful. They can guide you through the situation and provide inspection services to make recommendations regarding repair. It is recommended to choose a reputable company for these services.
