Backyard Classroom: Five Ways to Teach Your Children in Your ADU at Home

Arthur Basham December 28, 2022December 28, 2022

Since the outbreak, some parents have realized that homeschooling is a great way to continue their children’s education while still keeping them safe. If you have decided to homeschool, you have a wealth of resources just outside your front door. You’re in even better condition if your California property has an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). With an ADU, you have a plethora of alternatives for teaching your children while remaining in your primary house. Here are five suggestions for using your backyard to homeschool your children.

1. Gardening Instructions

While you have an ADU, you have numerous alternatives for homeschooling your children. It’s a great idea to incorporate gardening skills into your homeschool curriculum. Your children may learn about the plant life cycle and the need for suitable soil and sunlight for plant growth and development by producing herbs and vegetables in a garden bed. They may also learn about bug management, composting, and seed sowing. Without disrupting the main living area, the ADU may serve as a workplace for preparing, cleaning, and arranging the garden. Acton ADU, for example, may develop customized ADUs with kitchens for cleaning and extra storage for gardening materials.

Gardening is a fantastic method for kids to get some physical exercise outside, which is especially important when they spend most of their day sitting at a desk or computer. Your children will benefit from learning about nature and the great outdoors in a garden, whether you choose a little herb garden or several beds.

2. Animal Research

Another entertaining option is to incorporate animal studies into your children’s educational experience. This might include gardening, observing and interacting with local wildlife, or working with and learning from animals in your own backyard. There are several internet sites for learning more about insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, and other animals, both at home and in the classroom. Exposing your children to the world of animals may help them develop a better respect for all forms of life on Earth, as well as important abilities like caring for others and monitoring nature.

Do you have any pets? If this is the case, they can be utilized to teach youngsters about responsibility, compassion, and animal behavior. If you don’t already have a pet, this may be an excellent time to obtain a class pet to keep in the ADU! The kids can go to the ADU every day to report their observations on the pet or to do tasks like feeding and cleaning. By compelling children to travel to a specific area each day, they are provided with a classroom-like environment. Depending on local laws, you may be able to obtain a chicken or even a goat. Just be sure to do your homework first.

If you’re looking for creative ways to educate your children in an ADU, consider incorporating animal studies into their schooling.

3. Nature’s Art

Exposing your children to nature-inspired art is one of the best ways to homeschool them in your ADU. Through inquiry and engagement with the world, this immersive learning environment allows children to discover their artistic creativity. Possible hobbies include:

  • Sketching or painting in natural settings.
  • Watching and recording the weather.
  • Tracking animal movements.

Regardless of your child’s abilities or interests, there are several ways for them to engage with the natural world via art. You may walk to a local park or open the windows of your ADU to let in some fresh air. There are endless opportunities for creative exploration and development. The best part about having an art studio in an ADU is the greater creative freedom it provides, and because Acton ADU provides customizable ADUs in Mountain View, CA, you can include a kitchen for quick and easy clean-ups! Why not start today and give your children a truly unique education?

4. Reading Hutch in the Backyard

Another unusual homeschool option for your ADU is to create a comfortable outdoor reading nook where your children can snuggle up with their favorite books and enjoy some much-needed relaxation. You may add quirky blankets or cushions to the space, as well as beanbag chairs or lounge chairs for seating. This one-of-a-kind learning environment will help your children develop a love of reading while simultaneously providing a peaceful retreat from the rigors of everyday life. If you want to homeschool your children more effectively, consider creating a reading nook in your ADU.

5. Experiments in Science

There are various alternatives for homeschooling your children in your ADU. Science experiments are the most enjoyable and intriguing way. Educational science experiments are a wonderful way to keep your children’s attention and enable interactive learning, whether you’re studying new subjects or reinforcing skills they’ve already learned.

Incorporating STEM activities into your homeschooling curriculum is a great way to get started with scientific investigations. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is an acronym that stands for the basics of various academic subjects. There are various websites that offer step-by-step instructions on how to do these experiments at every grade level, from preschool to high school. Make constellation jars, test buoyancy with a DIY boat, or build contraptions out of everyday home materials to put fundamental machinery to the test.

You may also use everyday objects to learn about scientific concepts in more traditional lab settings. Filling plastic bags with changing amounts of water and gently rotating the bag to witness the form change are two examples of basic science experiments. Another is creating chemical reactions by putting various home chemicals in bowls or Petri dishes and monitoring their behavior over time. You might also do simple experiments based on what’s going on outside your ADU, such as temperature testing based on variations in sunlight throughout the day using thermal imaging cameras or imitating cloud formation in small DIY terrariums as a storm approaches.

Scientific projects, no matter how you choose to homeschool your children in your ADU, will undoubtedly be both entertaining and informative. So get in and let your imagination run wild!
